For more than a decade, the Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans has been dedicated to preserving, producing, and reimagining the extraordinary works of Tennessee Williams.

As we embark on Season Twelve, we're asking a larger question:

 

What is Tennessee Williams' legacy?

Not simply the remarkable body of work he left behind, but the generations of artists he inspired and the profound impact he continues to have on American theatre.

This season celebrates both.

Through two extraordinary works by Tennessee Williams, Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, and an exciting new community collaboration, Season Twelve explores hope, identity, memory, truth, and transformation while celebrating one of the most influential artistic legacies in American theatre.

STAIRS TO THE ROOF

Spring 2027

One of Tennessee Williams' earliest and most enchanting works, Stairs to the Roof opens Season Twelve with a celebration of hope, imagination, and the courage to dream beyond the ordinary.

When a young executive abandons the machinery of modern life, he begins climbing a staircase—both literal and metaphorical—that leads him on a surreal journey through a series of extraordinary encounters that challenge everything he believes about success, freedom, and what it truly means to live.

Rarely produced yet astonishingly relevant, this luminous theatrical fable reminds us that every great journey begins with the courage to take the first step.

ANGELS IN AMERICA: MILLENNIUM APPROACHES

Summer 2027

Season Twelve marks the next evolution of TWTC's artistic vision, celebrating not only the extraordinary works of Tennessee Williams, but also the remarkable artistic legacy he left behind through the playwrights he inspired.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays ever written, Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece explores love, loss, faith, identity, politics, and the AIDS epidemic through one of the defining achievements of modern American theatre.

Presented in collaboration with Tulane University's Department of Jewish Studies, with additional community partnerships to be announced exploring HIV/AIDS, the AIDS crisis, public health, politics, government, and their continuing relevance today.

TWTC will continue this extraordinary journey with Angels in America: Perestroika in Summer 2028.

SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER

Fall 2027

One of Tennessee Williams' most haunting masterpieces returns as a completely reimagined immersive theatrical experience unlike anything TWTC has ever created.

Set inside a haunting sanitarium, audiences will be seated onstage and immersed within a fractured world where memory, nightmare, and reality collide.

Featuring an intimate cast of four actors and an evocative fusion of projection, sound, and media design, this bold new staging invites audiences to question whether memory can ever be trusted—and whether truth can finally set us free.

WILLIAMS UNDER THE OAKS

A Free Lagniappe Event

Presented in collaboration with the Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival, Williams Under the Oaks is a new annual outdoor celebration of Tennessee Williams beneath New Orleans' iconic live oaks.

Featuring performances, readings, music, and theatrical celebration, this free community event will lead directly into one of the city's most beloved traditions—the annual Stella Shouting Contest.

Tennessee Williams didn't simply leave behind a remarkable body of work.

He changed American theatre.

His influence can be found in generations of playwrights who followed, forever transforming how stories are told on the American stage.
